Summary of Meeting
Mike informed everyone that Amanda has been off work for approximately 6 weeks with serious
injuries from an accident. Our best wishes to Amanda for a full and speedy recovery.

Mike presented an overview of the spring conference workshop on the effectiveness of scare
tactics. Andy C. has joined Mike and Corrine in the preparation for this presentation. It is hoped
that we can get an internet connection. They will include discussion on the Montana meth
project, Scared Straight and DARE.

Judi will forward information on Jacqueline Saburido story to Mike and Corrine for possible
inclusion in their presentation.

Tracy reported on a meeting she, Andy C and Liz had to develop another workshop for the
conference that was prevention oriented. They decided the concept wasn’t fully worked out as to
purposefulness so no further work was done on it.

Amy and Kristen advised “Gino Latino” is employed at Chestnut and is available to deliver a
motivational presentation to schools.

Here's some of my topics “Gino” Andre Jimenez advises he can elaborate on:

Topic #1)
Positive Youth Development Issues: Andre's extensive experience in working with deeply
troubled kids for so many years has led him to develop and run highly innovative
prevention programs throughout the community to help teens develop positive assets and
character.

Primary objectives:

A) Raise awareness within the community and among young adolescents regarding
behaviors that place youth at risk

B) Provide skill-building opportunities for young adolescents which will allow them to
cope with pressure from others

C) Build skills for parents to help their children learn healthy behaviors
Topic #2

Effect on Media on Children:
Did you know?
According to parents in the Media in the Home 2000 study, children spend 6 ½ hours
with media every day.

By the time a child is eighteen years old, he or she will witness on television (with
average viewing time) 200,000 acts of violence including 40,000 murders.
National Violence Television Study that:

61% of television programs contain some violence.

43% of violent scenes contain humor.

Perpetrators of violence were depicted as attractive, 44% of the time.
No immediate punishment was depicted in nearly 75% of the violent scenes.
Many of the violent scenes depicted no harmful consequences.
Andre Jimenez cares passionately about his work at Chestnut Health system and the
Family, and believes that his seminar has the ability to impact lives and change not only
children's upbringing, but in turn affect the very fabric of our society in the upcoming
years. He believes that the increasing presence of media in our children's lives is
becoming an influential and pervasive force in their upbringing today. As a husband of 16
years and father of two girls and one boy who love computers, television, and video
games, he is personally involved in the challenge of how to navigate today's media
appropriately.

Topic #3
Teens and The Internet- In this presentation, Andre describe Internet basics, statistics
about children's use of the Internet, potential areas of concern, and Andre provides tips
for Internet safety.

Topic #4
Values and Attitudes - Are We Creating A Culture of Disrespect?
A culture of disrespect is growing up along side our children, following them into the
playgrounds, schools and streets where they live. Poor media habits have been a major influence on this

culture of disrespect. But disrespect is not the only effect of poor media
habits. Research shows they can affect literacy skills and decrease academic performance
as well. Andre will explore further the power of the media and the influence it is having
on our children and on us.

Topic #5
Gangs - Past & Present:
Learn how to identify and contend with street gangs and the crimes they commit.
Participant will look at modern street gangs, their origins, and their socioeconomic impact
on urban and rural neighborhood. Gang clothing, graffiti, hand signs, language, and
lifestyles will be identified. Participants will learn to assess gang activity effectively and
in a safe and street wise manner.

The committee discussed the concept of a 2 year training plan which included focusing on such
areas as:

- Filling the gap in the continuum of services - both adult and juvenile tracks
- Effective Community Collaborations including info on meth coalitions
Call Tracy with ideas related to a possible 2 yr plan.
Corrine has arranged for Rebecca Ward to speak to our committee at the conference. Ms. Ward
will also be presenting a workshop at the conference on dealing with Meth Addicts. We will
sponsor a hand-out table at the conference and are in need of posters, brochures of all kinds but
especially on opiates, pencils and pens. There was discussion on showing the training session
videos and commercials at the committee hand-out table. The committee brainstormed around
the creation of a contest for the conference, deciding to base it on April being Alcohol Awareness
month. Gary will compile a quiz of 0 questions related to knowledge of alcohol. Those
completing 8 of the 10 questions correctly will be eligible for a drawing. Tracy will bring tickets
for the drawing and we need prizes to be donated by the membership. Both Andy and Gary are
to do signs for the contest.

Committee Reports
Public Education
- the committee further discussed the idea of compiling newspaper articles on
tragedies resulting from alcohol and drug usage. We need further discussion on
the purpose of the project and uses for the information. Tracy and Brenda will put
something together for the fall conference and request members continue to
submit their articles to Liz in the meantime.
- IADDA and TASC are promoting awareness of the dangers of Alcopops. They
are supporting efforts to ban advertising during certain times and places.
Training
- Andy Y and Corrine will meet in Springfield to design a long-range plan. OASA
may be able to help financially with a collaboration training.
- Andy C. requested the committee sponsor a workshop on drug testing. He would
like to see an open forum to discuss the problems, solutions, purpose of drug
testing and the effective coordination with treatment providers
Newsletter
- Mike Carey needs/wants ideas and information submitted to him. All members
are welcome to write articles for the newsletter and Mike will assist with the
submission. We are now able to put the newsletter on the IPCSA website.
Website Development
- Andy Y. commits to getting our site up and running in the near future.
We our confirmed to meet on August 15 at Chestnut Health’s conference center. The June 22
meeting will be at Starved Rock State Park at 11 a.m. Arrive early to socialize before the
meeting. The fall conference will include a silent auction which will be coordinated by Andy C.
and Tracy.
